Design and create interactive art at The Art Garage. Make a permanent and unique hopscotch, tic-tac-toe and other games in our outside space! Artists will be able to create art that will survive the test of time by painting directly onto the concrete outside! We will also work large scale on a class mural by painting onto panels that will be prominently displayed at The Art Garage.

You don’t need a printing press for this printmaking workshop! Gelli plates are made of a unique plastic that allows artists to create fast drying, chemical free, complex prints that can be used to make books, greeting cards and artwork you’ll want to hang on your walls! We will use cardboard, styrofoam, stencils (some that we make ourselves) and collaging techniques to create wonderful masterpieces. Students will learn about complex layering, texture, paper masking, and more in this exciting new printmaking class at The Art Garage!

Alter scale and dimension, proportion and perspective, to create larger-than-life images! Students will stretch their imaginations and be encouraged to use an open mind as they develop critical thinking skills, acquire self confidence, and improve collaborative abilities in this fun class full of lofty creations. Students will use squeegees to push, pull, and scrape paint like Gerhard Richter, and create large scale Heather Galler inspired dogs using brilliant oil pastels!

Did you know the tusk of a Narwhal is actually it’s tooth!? We will dive deep into the ARTic Ocean to discover all there is to know about our beloved Narwhals. We will paint, draw and build them out of clay this week as we learn facts about and express our love for this wonderful sea creature. We will use the books Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea, Not Quite a Narwhal and Super Narwhal! for inspiration.

Artists will learn about the life and art of Jean-Michel Basquiat, and use his methods of merging image and text with painting and drawing to create visually stunning artworks. Working on wood panels, artists will use collographs, a collage printmaking technique, and combine them with words, letters, numerals, pictograms and logos. Acrylics, oil pastels and gestural drawing will be used to create meaningful, personalized, process-based artworks.

This week artist will explore working with pen and ink with watercolor on wood! Explore the beauty of pen and ink through zentangle warm-ups and sketches. Students will learn different kinds of mark making, such as cross-hatching and stippling, to shade and embellish their work. Develop your final drawing to put onto wood as you brighten it with watercolor and your zentangle designs

Big ones, small ones, cute ones, scary ones… Which dinosaur is your favorite? We will explore the lives of dinosaurs, what they ate and how they lived ages and ages ago. This week students will use clay, pencil, and a little paint to create many different dinosaurs. As a class we will create dinosaur footprint stamps that will literally stomp across our artwork! We will use visual resources and archeology to help us depict these larger than life creatures.

This class is all about metamorphosis and transformation! What new thing can you create by combining two unlike objects or animals? What can you make out of a seahorse and a saxophone? A pineapple and a porcupine? We will use the exquisite corpse method in both ceramics and 2D artmaking to really get our mashups mixed! Let’s find out in this class that will help advance your imagination and artistic skills through drawing, painting, and 3D materials!

You’ve never seen bugs like these! This class is all about BIG BUGS... colossal cockroaches, mammoth mantids, tremendous termites - oh my! These insects exist, though luckily not here in Denver! Students will learn about some of the world’s biggest bugs (like the Hercules Beetle coming in at 6.6 inches long) and bring other small bugs to life by making them large scale! Both 2D and 3D materials will be used.
