Performers will join New York City teens through their journey into the high stakes, competitive world of performing arts high school! These characters strive to make their dreams a reality; this pop culture phenomenon captures the fight for fame. The struggles, fears and triumphs – from prejudice to substance abuse – are depicted with razor-sharp focus as the young artists navigate the world of music, drama and dance. Performers will be challenged with fantastic opportunities to feature and explore their talents. Fame highlights a diverse casting pool and individual strengths amongst the players. Get ready to move, sweat, and sing your heart out! Through a strong ensemble development, we will work together to build the world, characters, and story behind Fame. Please note that though students may not receive their part of choice, all ensemble members will be challenged with stage time, including song, movement and dialogue. Over the course of two action-packed weeks, we will strengthen physical, vocal and acting technique in performers and create a wonderful ensemble experience. Have fun with Shakespeare this summer in this two-week English intensive, active, thoroughly enjoyable, “deep-dive” course. The centerpieces of this class will be two of Shakespeare’s hilarious and wonderful classic comedies: Midsummer Night’s Dream and All’s Well that Ends Well. The class will attend these two live performances at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival as field trips. (Tickets will be included in the class materials fee.) Students will read these plays, some sonnets, and famous speeches by Shakespeare. Students will also read some excerpts from notable Shakespearean criticism and view video clips of other productions. They will also look at Shakespeare’s mode of literary production as well as theater traditions of the Renaissance. Students will read, journal, write reviews and their own criticism and speeches, and perhaps try their hand at a little acting. And they will consider why Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest authors who ever lived and why Shakespearean plays continue to be a central feature of high school English curricula everywhere. Kent Denver is excited to offer this exciting and transformational educational experience! This course fulfills one semester of English for the Kent Denver graduation requirement. Kent students who pass it will have their grade appear on the KDS transcript and count as part of KDS GPA.
