Monsters have permeated literature throughout the centuries, but are they more than bloodthirsty villains? Writers will examine a few classic monsters (think Frankenstein, Jaws, Godzilla, and Aliens) to discover what is interesting about having a main character who’s mean and--maybe--misunderstood, and students will create their own monsters and villains, and tell their stories, too. Writers will learn about character, plot, and other literary elements in this creative writing workshop. Presented by Lighthouse Writers at Kent Denver. Grades: Students going into Spanish levels 2 or 3. Students will join Sra. Smiekel for a week of Spanish immersion to dust off the “language cobwebs” from the summer. The saying "if you don't use it, you lose it" definitely applies to learning a language and a long summer break!  No practice over the summer months can leave students rusty and less confident at the start of a new school year. This course is designed to give students the opportunity to get back into the swing of things with Spanish. Students will touch on the 4 skills - reading, writing, listening and ...especially speaking ... to insure that Spanish language students start the year off with confidence and excitement and are  ready to be immersed in Spanish again.  Materials Fee: $15

Students 14½ and older are eligible to take the course and, upon their 15th birthday, are eligible to get their permits.  During the 12 months that students must hold their permit, they will complete 6 hours of driving lessons (from the Greenwood Village DriveSafe Center or any of our 10 area locations).  Depending on the program students are enrolled in, they may also take their license test through DriveSafe and participate in a highly valuable 5-hour Defensive Skills Day. There's one thing the movers and shakers of the app design industry have in common: each of them saw a need in their community, and then designed an app that filled that need. In this course, students will consider the ethical and social impact of apps as part of fulfilling their overall goal of developing an app that could be sold on the Google Play store. Students will interview members of their community to gain insight into needs that might be met through app development. Students will learn the basics of coding in the text and blocks based JavaScript coding platform App Lab in order to make these app designs a reality, and conclude with an examination of common marketing techniques and strategies for selling an app.  No prior code experience required. This is a great opportunity for budding entrepreneurs who would like to dive into the world of coding. If you took Apps for Change last year, come back to deepen your skills in app development and the entrepreneurial side app marketing! More app practice and clients await your coding expertise! Materials Fee: $15
