Have fun with Shakespeare this summer in this two-week English intensive, active, thoroughly enjoyable, deep-dive course. The centerpieces of the class will be two of Shakespeare’s hilarious and wonderful classic comedies: Midsummer Night’s Dream and All’s Well that Ends Well. Both of these will be performed in the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and the class will attend these productions as field trips (tickets will be part of the class’s costs). We will read these plays, some sonnets, and some famous speeches by Shakespeare. We will also read some excerpts from notable Shakespearean criticism and view video clips of other productions. We will look at Shakespeare’s mode of literary production as well as theater traditions of the Renaissance. We will read, write (reviews, our own criticism, even our own speeches), journal, and perhaps try our hand at a little acting. We will consider why some consider Shakespeare the greatest author who ever lived and why Shakespearean plays continue to be a central feature of high school English curricula everywhere. This course fulfills as one semester of English for the Kent Denver graduation requirement. Students who pass it will have the grade appear on the KDS transcript and count as part of KDS GPA. This is the first time that Kent Denver is offering anything like this. Be among the first students ever to be a part of this great and exciting educational experiment!
