There's one thing the movers and shakers of the app design industry have in common: each of them saw a need in their community, and then designed an app that filled that need. In this course, students will consider the ethical and social impact of apps as part of fulfilling their overall goal of developing an app that could be sold on the Google Play store. Students will interview members of their community to gain insight into needs that might be met through app development. Students will learn the basics of coding in the text and blocks based JavaScript coding platform App Lab in order to make these app designs a reality, and conclude with an examination of common marketing techniques and strategies for selling an app.  No prior code experience required. This is a great opportunity for budding entrepreneurs who would like to dive into the world of coding. If you took Apps for Change last year, come back to deepen your skills in app development and the entrepreneurial side app marketing! More app practice and clients await your coding expertise! Materials Fee: $15

Students who enjoy watching Survivorman, Dual Survival, Ultimate Survival Alaska, or Man vs. Wild and love spending time outdoors hiking, camping, backpacking, or even skiing...this is the class for you! SURVIVE 1 is also for the student who has always wondered what to do if stranded on the roadside during a storm, lost in the woods, or injured while skiing the back bowls. This class is for students who have always wanted to be prepared in any survival situation. Survivalists will learn to make survival fires and shelters, use a survival knife safely, purify water, signal for help, and meet their basic survival needs. This entirely hands-on program will be conducted mostly in the outdoors on Kent Denver's campus. Students will join Chris Michaud, a Kent Denver teacher and an experienced survival and emergency preparedness instructor, on this week-long summer adventure. Students will walk away with a new set of skills that will enable them to not only survive but to help them become more self-reliant and confident. Materials Fee: $40
